Event information

Telling The Bees are an innovative acoustic band from Oxford, making unique and original, darkly crafted folk. Taking their inspiration from folklore, landscape, psychedelia, paganism and the politics of protest, Telling The Bees mix driving songs and tune-sets with haunting ballads. Intelligent lyrics, exotic rhythms and modes. Their skilful arrangements, wild at times, gentle at others, conjure up vivid images, as crafted, rugged and graceful as a woodcut.

Andy Letcher writes the songs, fronts the band and provides rhythm on mandolin and stomp. He also plays pipes and is a leading figure in the English bagpiping revival. He cut his teeth in bands like Celtarabia, Paescod and Space Goats, taught alongside Chris Wood at the English Acoustic Collective Summer School and has guested with Bellowhead..
Classically trained but steeped in folk music, Jane Griffiths is a gifted fiddle player. Her light touch and effortless ability to move between styles have made her an in-demand session musician, most recently recording for Maddy Prior, Moon'shee and Simon Emerson (Imagined Village).
Anglo-Concertina pioneer Jim Penny is renowned for his unique, funky approach to the instrument, exploring its improvisatory potential and treating it more like a Hammond Organ than the scratchy folk instrument of yore. He was a founder member of the much missed Red Dog Green Dog, playing for French and Breton dancing.
Cellist Barney Morse Brown also tours and records with his own group Duotone and folk supergroup The Imagined Village, and worked with Chris Wood on the latter's Handmade Life album and tour. His versatility, precision and sense of funk have made him an in-demand session musician, most recently recording with Jackie Oates.
Colin Fletcher is a respected bass player, a longstanding member of the Tim Van Eyken Band. His innovative approach to the bass, using overhand technique, means he can oscillate between funky bass lines and chordal pads, both of which give Telling The Bees a distinctive sound.
