Yuriy Galkin Nonet
Jazz in the Loft@The Cellar
Monday 19 March
8:30pm – 11:00pm
Yes, you read that correctly, a nine-piece band! Southampton Jazz Club is extremely fortunate to have been able to promote an orchestra of this talent thanks to the generous support shown by the Arts Council funded through the National Lottery but initially the impetus came through hearing the band’s debut CD, “Nine Of A Kind” and being very impressed by the quality of writing, arranging and of course playing. This charismatic nine-piece jazz orchestra creates beautiful layers of music but hasn’t forgotten how to swing!
Award-winning composer and bassist Yuriy Galkin has already established himself as one of the most creative jazz musicians of his generation and lists Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Fred Hersch and Wayne Shorter as some of his compositional influences. He has risen to the challenges of creating interesting and fresh textures for a nine-piece jazz orchestra by developing a unique musical language that includes classical and Latin music.
Yuriy, a Royal Academy of Music graduate, gained recognition for his extraordinary compositional skills in 2007, winning the UK Composition Competition (judged by Tim Garland) and in 2010 the prestigious Dankworth Composition Prize for his piece ‘Evolvent’.
In 2008, Yuriy formed the Symbiosis Orchestra, now the Yuriy Galkin Nonet, to
perform his original compositions and arrangements. It features the very
best of young British talent – Freddie Gavita (trumpet, flugelhorn), Steve Fishwick (trumpet, flugelhorn), Jon Stokes (trombone), George Crowley (tenor sax), Tamar Osborn (baritone and soprano saxes, bass clarinet), John Turville (piano), Dave Hamblett (drums) – and Russian Zhenya Strigalev (alto sax).
Nine Of A Kind, the Nonet’s debut album, was released at the beginning of February on F-IRE Presents (F-IRE CD 50).
“….elegantly layered music….” John Fordham, The Guardian
