Yes its that time again folks, when we celebrate the very best of UK bands with our friends from Clubhouse Records, and leave no expense spared with the extravaganza that is Tingestock2012!
The best and most imaginative things are borne of necessity and this is certainly true of The Hi and Lo. When Nick Bott and Paul McLure were left in the lurch by band members at a gig, they decided to wing it with just the two of them and it worked. From behind his drum kit, Nick impresses with his multi tasking by also playing the electric guitar or banjo and harmonising with Paul who provides rhythm guitar.
The band produces high quality stuff with slower ballads such as ‘Holding A Ten Ton Load’ which keeps an earthy feel with the wailing harmonica and punching drums, to a more country twang of ‘The Bad Times aren’t as Bad (they’re even worse). The duo captivates not only with musicianship but also with easy banter and Paul’s deadpan world-weary monologues. The good humour and infectious music spreads throughout the audience so by the time the sing-a-long ‘Ray of Sunshine’ came along everyone joins in.
The Cedars are a London based Alt-Americana quartet, with soaring vocals, infectious rhythms and blasts of slide guitar and banjo. Plying tales of lost love, revenge and rural homicide, The Cedars manage to straddle the divide between the dancehalls of the 20's and 30's and what's going on in the scene right now.
The Cedars combine raucous Americana with dark, foreboding blues and the occasional heart-stopping ballad to produce heady, intoxicating music. Having built both a formidable live set and an enthusiastic following since their first show back in 2006, they have become highly respected amongst their peers on the alt.folk and Americana scenes. Their debut album ‘Little Copper Still’, has garnered critical acclaim from radio and music press with tracks from the album appearing on Americana and Folk collections here in the UK and in the States.
Over the last 5 years The Barker Band has evolved from a band featuring twins Jake & Sam Barker and oldest friend Laurie Sherman into one of the country’s top country-rock bands. The band expanded to include vocalist Nella Johnson, bass player Tom Wright with drummer Ru Shreeve, making up the core of the band. Guitarist Samir Yakoubi, fiddle player Simon Cohen and Dave Fretton playing the keys make up some of the musicians that play with the Barker Band.
They’ve been playing regularly at venues like The Borderline, The Wheelbrarrow, The Boogaloo as well as appearing at festivals including The Camden Crawl and The Innocent Festival in Regent’s Park, South By South West Festival in Austin Texas, Bestival, Glastonbury and Summertyne. They have recently appeared at the Strummerville spring sessions. They have also recorded radio sessions for Bob Harris’s Country Show, Steve Lamacq and the Queens of Noize. In June 09 the band released their 3rd album “Sorry for The Kissing” earning 4 stars from Q magazine, and 5 stars from Country Music People magazine and are now set to release their 4th album ‘Dig Me A Hole’.
Last summer The Dreaming Spires released their new single ‘Everything All The Time’ on Clubhouse Records, a rousing, anthemic slice of pure unadulterated rock n' roll that instantly has all the makings of a classic. The band bursts fresh out of the box with an enviable musical pedigree. Group members - and brothers - Robin and Joe Bennett were formally of Goldrush and Danny & the Champions of the World while the new single was produced by Supergrass producer (and Oxford based) Sam Williams. The band is skillfully aided by Loz Colbert of Ride on drums, making the guys something of an Oxford supergroup. This concoction has produced a breakout single which has you hooked from the first chord, taking in the heady vibe of Laurel Canyon via the harmonies of the Everlys (and giving a respectful nod to Tom Petty all the while).
This is Americana at its finest; not so much foot-tapping as dancing with abandon. ‘Everything All The Time’ is the first single to be released from The Dreaming Spires upcoming album and sets the scene for what promises to be an exceptional offering from a band that create music that fuses the warmth and energy of west-coast America with the spirit and heritage of their beloved home town of Oxford.
