Chris Abrahams is a Sydney based pianist best known for his work in the uncategorisable improvising trio The Necks. For this 'Evening with Chris Abrahams' he will perform two sets - one exploring his interest in electronics, using a deftly reprogrammed DX7 - and the other featuring is customarily idiosyncratic approach to the piano.
“Technically formidable and conceptually refined, Chris Abrahams pays homage to the piano by drawing it into tightly articulated and highly personalized forms. Known for his contributions to the efforts of avant-jazz trio The Necks, 'Thrown', Abrahams fourth solo document, is of altogether more focused, sternly controlled, yet continually surprising spontaneous designs. His music has the tautness and formality of modern composition, but its configuration of texture and coloration is immediate and propelled by an emergency in the playing.” Cyclic Defrost (on 'Thrown')
"Abrahams may be challenging expectations, but in Play Scar he has produced a record which will certainly exceed them." Mapsadaisical
"Opening with a much-repeated skewed pentatonic, he reduced all movement to a single, repeated upper-register note. At first it was so far spaced, and so random, that it sounded like someone tuning a piano. Over quite a few minutes, Abrahams accelerated, stripping out any idea of pitch and filling the entire room with the sound of the piano’s essential make-up: a hammer crashing on to a taut wire in a wooden box."
