Event information

Two much loved, Brighton based songsmiths come together for a double- billing to cook up a feast for the ears.

ALAN BONNER
Having been compared by critics to the likes of Rufus Wainwright and David Bowie, Alan’s second album Balladeer is released in May 2012, alongside an on-going UK and European tour. Balladeer is a set of beautifully-crafted songs of love, loss, hope and redemption from a 21st-century Troubadour with folk leanings and a pop sensibility. With gentle orchestration by cello, piano, ukulele, accordion and guitar, it’s a much more stripped-back affair than its 2008 predecessor Songs for the Heartshaped.

Listen to Balladeer and you’ll hear Alan’s own unique take on the romantic and the political, the heart-breaking and the uplifting. There’s Talia, the heart-warming ode to a best friend, and Rainbow Man, a vitriolic protest song inspired by the infamous hate-killing of Matthew Shepherd. The nostalgic Autumn is a lonely reflection on a love long-since lost, the hopeful Ocean urges the listener to ‘love like you’ve never been hurt and just dive in', and a happy-clappy dose of perfect folk-pop comes in the form of Lighthouse Song.

“Alan Bonner came to create a sort of poetic oasis amongst the more vivacious and aggressive guitar-based bands. His music was an onomatopoeic melange of sounds, where the melodic piano meets the melancholic cello and the softly-stroked guitar. All instruments were then embraced by Alan’s gritty yet mellifluous vocals and the sound of it was interesting. Pieces like Narcissist's Wet Dream and Talia stood out as possible singles, both reminiscent of Tori Amos' evocative airs and with decadent themes à la Bowie.”

PAUL DIELLO

Having stunned audiences on both sides of the atlantic with his angelic vocals and bittersweet lyricism, Paul Diello is a star in the making, who's debut album The Last Green Bottle has one him praise from music fans and bloggers alike.

“From the minute he walks onto stage, Paul engages you in his world of torment and wonder. His ability to juxtapose his haunting ‘Antony and the Johnsons-esque’ voice with a performance akin to Eddie Izzard is refreshing and original. During his Brighton album launch there were moments of sheer genius with each track providing something different for the audience, whether it be heart-rending raw emotion or rhythms that course through your body and make you get up and dance. Paul Diello is simply breathtaking – a must-see artist."
