Event information

Mystery Plays Records presents the debut UK performance from Australian electronics and guitar pop experimentalist Shoeb Ahmad to celebrate the launch of his new album “Watch/Illuminate”. Ably supported by electronic-jazz-improv trio Leverton Fox who also launch their new album “The Human Arm”, plus space rock excursions from Oxford ensemble Flights of Helios.

SHOEB AHMAD

A hero of the burgeoning alternative Australian music scene, Canberra born singer and producer Shoeb Ahmad’s debut solo record ‘Watch/Illuminate’, is a masterpiece of ambient drone and gorgeous minimal melodicism, striking a perfect balance between space-y, cinematic soundscapes and delicate, chiming chill wave pop.

Drawing influence from past masters of ambient song-writing such as Talk Talk and shoegaze legends Slowdive as well as contemporary electronica producers including James Blake and Toro Y Moi, ‘Watch/Illuminate’ is a fascinating synergy of old and new, a hinterland crossroads of the ever-shifting face of contemporary pop music. Produced at home in Canberra and on the road throughout the south-eastern territories of Oz, NZ and Asia, ‘Watch/Illuminate’ is a document of one man’s travels across seas and oceans, deserts and savannah. Guest performers include Columbian singer Lucrecia Perez and acclaimed sound artist Lawrence English.

”The kind of record that exists at the indeterminable periods between night and day, when you’re not quite sure whether it’s a bright night or a murky day.” – Cyclic Defrost

LEVERTON FOX

Formed in 2007/8 by Alex Bonney, Tim Giles and Matt Groom, Leverton Fox collage together a battery of musical inspiration, from noise and lo-fi electronics to free improvisation and psychedelia with a healthy dose of irreverence.

The group produced their first LP, 2008s ‘Country Dances’ for cult underground indie label Gravid Hands, recorded partly in a disused barn in Berkshire as well as a variety of North London’s grungy music rooms. Since 2009 the group has had a new line up featuring Isambard Khroustaliov from acclaimed electronica duo Icarus in place of Matt Groom.

In 2010 with this new line up they toured the UK supporting the celebrated Norwegian improving duo Humcrush and began recording their new album ‘The Human Arm’. Leverton Fox are releasing the ‘Human Arm’ at Dalston’s Cafe Oto on June 16th 2012, following on from recent performances in Oslo and Gothenburg.

FLIGHTS OF HELIOS

Flights of Helios are a space prog drone pop band from Oxford. Formed as an offshoot of post jazz improv ensemble Braindead Collective, Flights of Helios combine spiralling, caustic, atmospheric electronica with reverb drenched post rock guitar drones and singer Chris Beard's heart stopping lead vocal.
