COLOUR ME POP presents:
The Occasional Flickers, Jonny Collins (of Modesty Blaise) and Spaghetti Anywhere
***************************************************************************
Here comes the next Colour Me Pop gig and what a charmer it is! It’s a week before Indietracks but none of these bands are playing the festival so it’s a special treat to start building your stamina for 3 days of ODing on indiepop. I present to you three fabulous bands all descending upon the upstairs room of the Betsey, ready to win you over and make you smile and swoon.

THE OCCASIONAL FLICKERS (from Edinburgh, with a Greek topping)
http://lingeronrecords.com/the-occasional-flickers/
I was given the album ‘Scattered Songs’, a gem on Plastilina, a few years ago and thought it quietly beautiful, a collection of soft songs, though filled out with a menagerie of instruments. Imagine my surprise when I eventually saw the band play live at the Glasgow Popfest in 2010 and they were confident, upbeat and had me dancing for much of the time! I hadn’t expected such a full on proper pop band but my god, they were infectious. I wondered why on earth had they not played outside of Scotland when they had fantastic songs and were clearly well practiced. I knew this had to change and I was so happy when Giorgos contacted me, wanting to play in London. Why did he want to play at this time? Because The Occasional Flickers recently released a new album, Home is a Four Letter Word (listen to songs on their bandcamp!). Some of these songs may be familiar to fans already, particularly ‘Fly Kite Fly’ which was released for a Cloudberry single to promote a Scottish indiepop show (with The Felt Tips and The Catalysts). Giorgos is incredibly excited to play outside of Edinburgh with his updated band. Please come out and see this super rare live performance by The Occasional Flickers!

JONNY COLLINS (of Modesty Blaise, coming over from Bristol)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jonny-Collins/128663633856115
Jonny had me at ‘February Forever Girl’ but I hadn’t thought lately about Modesty Blaise until the ever trailblazing Big Pink Cake had him play their weekender in November 2011. I was bowled over by the buckets of charm coming out of this petite package. I couldn’t stop smiling! There was even audience participation and a dance interpretation by his lovely children. Before he even gets on stage, Jonny calls your attention immediately, with his dapper style and ‘do. A consummate showperson, Jonny is the kind of artist who leaves other solo performers in the dust. You can’t take your eyes from him and will be cheering him on.
Jonny has a single coming out on Big Pink Cake records. Maybe it will be available for this show!

SPAGHETTI ANYWHERE (London-based, from all over the globe)
http://spaghettianywhere.bandcamp.com/
Spaghetti Anywhere – now that’s a name to catch your attention. There was a period maybe 1-2 years ago that I saw them mentioned on various blogs. I listened to their delightful songs online – ‘Girlfriends With Boyfriends’ caught my ear immediately by sound. But by name, it was ‘Gregory’s Girl’ that won my heart. I looked forward to seeing them live. I had heard that some of them were from Italy and other places. I thought it was cute to be Italian and have ‘spaghetti’ in your band name. They played live every few months but always on an odd Tuesday and on random bills not usually put together by careful curators but by venues. When was my time going to come?
The time is now! Spaghetti Anywhere are in London and they’re going to join this well-matched bill of charming indiepop. It’s a perfect mix of classic and modern, local and international – just what I like. And I hope you will too. Come out and see these talented musicians that very rarely or never play in London. What a treat!
