Event information

Brighthelmstone Promotions are delighted to present Hurray For The Riff Raff from New Orleans. A sound difficult to describe with styles ranging from Old School Country, Pop, Cajun, Folk and Jazz delivered with punk attitude.

Hurray For The Riff Raff began when Alynda Lee Segarra left her native Bronx, New York at the age of 17 and started hopping freight trains across the USA ending up in New Orleans. This sense of journey and good old time story telling is at the forefront of the music. Hurray For The Riff Raff were voted No.2 in Mojo's SXSW Picks 2011.

The new album Lookout Mama is likely to take this fine collective to the next level and is released by Loose music on 20th August

Recorded in Nashville and produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), Look Out Mama is an exploration of classic American music as interpreted by Alynda Lee Segarra. From the Swamp Pop of "Little Black Star" to the Classic Country of "Look Out Mama", to the Psychedelia of “Ode to John and Yoko” and even the Surf-Rock of “Lake of Fire”, Look Out Mama covers a wide array of musical ground, with every song unified by Alynda’s soulful vocals and expert songwriting.

"Hurray For The Riff Raff have a gift for crafting songs in a country-folk style that sound fresh, personal and heartfelt." The Times

"Alynda Lee Segarra evokes comparisons to a soulful young Loretta Lynn " MOJO

Mad Staring Eyes

We were sent this CD by Ark PR and thought that the songs are so current lyrically yet traditional in sound that we had to put them on. If Fairport Convention had just formed today this is how they might sound. Traditional with a modern twist influenced by The Band, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen and 'talking to the operator' the new album released 4th June has been in the top 10 Brighthelmstone charts for two months.

In 2006 Mad Staring Eyes self-titled debut EP won the John Peel 'Best New Band' award and they played Glastonbury Festival that year.

"Music that makes you want to cry, laugh, dance and sing...all at once."
