Blood, frogs, flies, hailstones and fire, locusts and 'a thick darkness that might be felt' are the evocative subjects of the powerful choruses which have made Israel in Egypt a pillar of the English choral society tradition. Unlike all Handel's other oratorios, Israel in Egypt is almost entirely in the hands of the chorus, with only 4 arias in total. Paradoxically it is perhaps this feature, together with the enormous power of the writing, which has made the work so beloved of English audiences - paradoxical because when first written it was highly unpopular for its lack of aria and recitative. Come and decide for yourself.
