The Last Folklore at Jamboree (for a while at lease) promises to be a corker .. Feast your eyes on this delectable selection ..
PATCH & THE GIANT
‘Fantastically energetic and foot-stomping super 7′ (thankfolkforthat.com). Patch & The Giant are an alt-folk band from London; a spirited troupe of five boys and two girls who together craft a sound which is big, beguiling and distinctly characterful. With an air of ramshackle decadence, the songs are delivered with strong vocal harmonies, soaring strings, keys and buttons along with boots, braces and warbling brass. Their hearty and energetic take on modern folk is rustically enigmatic with definite nods towards the sea; the songs are anthemic, profoundly lyrical with most featuring at least one ship and the death count tends to be high.
As band in residence at The Boogaloo in Highgate (dubbed by GQ magazine as ‘the sweetest little juke-joint in the world’), Patch and The Giant are also behind Sunday Fete @ The Boogaloo, a monthly all-afternoon event celebrating the best of the folk and acoustic scene from in and around London.
NICK EDWARD HARRIS
“Inspired by musicians Andy McKee, John Smith and Paul Curreri, Nick Edward Harris combines delicate finger-picking and percussive guitar playing with distinctive lyrical storytelling.”
Folie a Deux
“This is an album full of maturity and a strong sense of musical identity. Harris's vocal is warm yet emotive and his guitar playing highly technical, yet melodic.”
11 is louder than 10
For the past few years Nick has been following in the footsteps of his musical friends Moulettes and Mumford and Sons and frequently collaborates with harpist Emma Gatrill (The Mariner's Children, Sons of Noel and Adrian).
Having recorded an E.P. in 2010 with Ben Lovett of Communion Records he has now finished his debut album, Chimera. The album features unique collaborations with Emma Gatrill and Ted Dwane.
Recently Nick has been playing festivals and supporting alternative acoustic band Maia on their UK tour. His debut album Chimera is out now.
INTI ROWLAND
A delightful, folk-inflected record which stands out from the glut of twinkly, indistinct, acoustic music that seems, albeit gently, to assail one these days.
Inti’s voice has a kind of choir-boy purity to it, yet isn’t lacking in emotional texture, his guitar-playing is bright and subtle, and his song writing is sophisticated, particularly in terms of structure: the timing is beautifully measured, and there are plenty of well-judged pauses and spaces.
