'Stunning Irish/Scottish traditional music with a twist' Maverick****
NUALA KENNEDY is an Irish singer and flute player whose music features liltingly beautiful vocals, adventurous instrumentation, and an imaginative mix of influences. Although her repertoire is rooted in the traditional music of her native Ireland and adopted homeland of Scotland, Nuala has also gained critical attention for her eclectic cross-genre work. She has performed and recorded Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Norwegian musicians Frode Haltli and Vegar Vardal, and the late Canadian composer Oliver Schroer.
On her third solo album 'Noble Stranger', Nuala is accompanied by her Scottish touring band: percussionist Donald Hay, guitarist Mike Bryan and mandolinist Iain Macleod. The tight musical arrangements and deep grooves on the record attest to the staying power of her new road-tested tracks. Classic traditional songs such as 'My Bonny Labouring Boy,' and 'Matt Hyland' re-emerge as a natural part of this recording where a small but beautiful vintage Casio keyboard also inspired new songs, including 'Gabriel Sings'.
"Her spirit gravitates to the unusual, oddball and interesting, and her current band fits that bill; the unique music they make shows an amused modernism, cut to suit with creatively coloured minimalist phrasing and walloping conjunctions, and all played with a rippingly assured instrumental confidence." Journalist Norman Chalmers
Support from A.J. Roach...
A. J. ROACH was born and raised in the deep hollows of mountainous Scott County, Virginia -- the cultural and geographical epicenter of America's Appalachian Mountain Range, and the birthplace of American country music. Known for his relentless touring schedule, A. J. has traveled well over one million miles and performed in more than a dozen countries since the release of his first album in 2003. He was winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Award at MerleFest in 2004 and winner of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2011. His songs have been placed in feature-length film and television shows including the CW's 'One Tree Hill' and Showtime's 'The United States of Tara' and his second album, 'Revelation', was #1 on the Euro-Americana Chart in Europe and #5 on the FAR (folk and roots) US chart.
At the forefront of the new troubadour movement, A. J.'s songs blur the line between traditional and indie folk. His music has been featured in several U.S. televison shows and feature-length films, and has drawn comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, Vic Chesnutt and Will Oldham.
'A.J. is a true poet' Tom T. Hall
'Roach deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Will Oldham, Vic Chesnutt and David Eugene Edwards' - San Franciso Bay Guardian.
