Rising from the ashes of one of Grey Lantern's favourite UK bands of recent years, Department M is the new project of former Grammatics front man Owen Brinley.
Grammatics' built a reputation on offering a wonderfully skewed portrayal of pop, twisting and contorting the weirdness within it, and Brinley brings those attributes to Department M, offering a kaleidoscopic world of synth-based structures that struggle between light and dark.
They co-tour with Menace Beach, an exciting project featuring members of Hookworms, Sky Larkin, Komakino and Young Animals. Their sound is a kaleidoscopic vision of fuzzed out, discordant pop akin to Built To Spill, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, The Dandy Warhols and Sebadoh.
In between these groups we have the wonderful SHINIES, this four-piece turned a lot of heads quickly last year, and it's easy to see why; the group make scuzzed up fuzz-pop that offers almost an embarrassment of riches when it comes to earworm hooks and breezy melodies.
