Somewhere between Jazz, Folk, Chanson and Americana there’s an area of music
that doesn’t have a name. Honed over twenty years of wandering and touring, McGee's
songs show the light touch of a singer with an instinctive reflex for bringing together
words and music. Gentle, and with the bittersweet edge of experience, her voice
speaks directly from an open heart, and her rich, dark style continues to defy
categorisation.
KIRSTY MCGEE

Twice nominated for the BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARDS and winner of an IMA, McGee has shared the stage with artists such as KARINE POLWART, EDDI READER, SI KAHN, CAPERCAILLIE AND SUZANNE VEGA. Her songs, increasingly in demand, have been covered by the likes of ARCHIE FISHER, KARINE POLWART, MIRANDA SYKES (whose album ‘Bliss’ takes its name from one of McGee’s songs) and ANNIE GRACE.

Since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album HONEYSUCKLE in 2002, McGee’s relentless touring schedule has taken her across the European mainland as well as to the USA. McGee’s fifth album No.5, recorded live in one take with her band The Hobopop Collective won the Best Live Performance Album (vox pop) in the INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS. In autumn 2012, she will be releasing a brand new solo album, CONTRABAND, on her own label Hobopop Recordings.

Coming out of a year during which she almost gave up music entirely, her latest album, CONTRABAND deals with ‘the illicit ways we can cling to love’, and sees Kirsty more musically and emotionally exposed than ever before. The album features guest appearances from acclaimed songwriters from around the world, including recent Live Room guests Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin.
