Event information

Five times BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Jim Causley is singer/accordionist who is passionate about traditional song and particularly that of his native Devon. Previous incarnations include The Devil's Interval and Mawkin:Causley and he has recorded with the likes of Waterson:Carthy, Show of Hands, John McCusker and David Rotheray of Beautiful South fame. In recent years, projects have included touring with Steve Knightley and Kate Rusby.

2015 sees the release of a new album Forgotten Kingdom, somewhat of a departure and a new beginning; this is Jim’s first album of entirely self-penned material. It is being recorded and produced by Phil Beer and will mark exactly ten years since the release of Causley’s debut album Fruits of the Earth.

2013’s Cyprus Well saw Jim setting to music the poems of his relative, the late Charles Causley. This new album will showcase him not just as a fine traditional singer and musician, not only as an interpreter of others people’s words but as a fine wordsmith in his own right. It will feature many of Jim’s friends from the Devon folk scene including members of Show of Hands, Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll, long-time collaborator James Dumbelton as well as some surprise cameos.

You can expect to hear a few re-workings of traditional tales as well as songs exploring previously untold stories of Causley’s native Westcountry inspired by projects he has been involved in during the past few years such as a collaboration with artist Simon Pope and Exeter’s Spacex Gallery which focused on the tin mining heritage of Devon and produced the song ‘Pride of the Moor’. And it wouldn’t be a Jim Causley without a few light-hearted numbers to offset the balance! This will be an album firmly rooted in ancient history yet told from a bang up-to-date perspective with all the light and shade which that entails.
