John Andrews - conductor

We're thrilled to present a concert of fairy tale-inspired works under the baton of guest conductor John Andrews.

The programme begins with Wagner's nautically-themed overture to the 'The Flying Dutchman'. The idea for this dramatic work began to take shape in Wagner's mind during a rough sea-crossing, with the music evoking the lash of spray, the whistle of gales in the rigging, misty spectres and heaving waves.

The central work is the tone poem 'The Golden Spinning Wheel' by Dvořák, full of dramatic incident, imaginative colours and passionate melodies. Based on a poem by the Czech poet Erban, this is one of a quartet of symphonic poems which reflect the composer at the height of his craft, both as a melodist and a fine orchestrator.

Completing the concert will be Rimsky Korsakov's celebrated 'Scheherazade', an enchanting piece which was inspired by the Middle Eastern 'Tales of the Arabian Nights.' Featuring beautiful solos for violin (played by Sally Telling,) it is richly orchestrated and full of exotic sensuous melodies, evoking characters such as Sinbad the Sailor.

Join us at 7pm for a free concert talk all about the evening's music.

Free tickets for under 16s and £5 tickets for students are available from the Trinity Orchestra Box Office on 020 8428 5924 or at the door (subject to availability).
