Colin Lawson and Gillian Hughes - clarinet soloists
Trinity Orchestra is delighted to welcome back renowned clarinettist and Director of the Royal College of Music Colin Lawson, who performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to great acclaim last season.
In this concert he will join forces with our outstanding principal clarinettist Gillian Hughes to perform Krommer's concerto for two clarinets. This delightful work, written in 1815, is light and playful in character and a real crowd-pleaser.
The evening also offers the rare chance to witness Professor Lawson on the conductor's podium, as he expertly leads the orchestra in Mendelssohn's lovely 'The Fair Melusina Overture'. Surprisingly, this is one of the composer's lesser-known works, despite the fact that it was a favourite of the Mendelssohn and his circle.
Also on the bill is Dvořák's famous Symphony No. 7. This symphony, together with the eighth and ninth, represents the Czech composer at his best, with each work revealing a somewhat different aspect of his personality. The seventh is the most ambitious in structure, and Dvořák himself wrote of it that "there is not one superfluous note".
Hear more about the music in a free pre-concert talk at 7pm.
Free tickets for under 16s and £5 tickets for students are available from the Trinity Orchestra Box Office on 020 8428 5924 or at the door (subject to availability).
