TCHAIKOVSKY Hamlet Fantasy Overture
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Tuba Concerto in F minor
BERLIOZ Symphonie Fantastique
Richard Murray - conductor
Jonathan Gawn - tuba soloist
For our spring concert we're thrilled to welcome, as guest conductor, the Royal Air Force's distinguished Director of Music Richard Murray. He will be presenting a very exciting and varied programme, beginning with the 'Hamlet Fantasy Overture' by Tchaikovsky. Dedicated to Grieg, the essence of the work is the brooding atmosphere depicting Elsinore, the setting of Shakespeare's play.
Next, we hear the RAF's talented principal tuba player Jonathan Gawn performing the Tuba Concerto by Vaughan Williams. The great British composer liked the instrument and often included parts for it in his orchestral works, and in this concerto it takes centre stage and proves that it can hold its own as a solo instrument.
The final work in this concert will be the supremely popular 'Symphonie Fantastique' by Berlioz. Using a large orchestra, this extraordinary piece of music consists of a series of depictions of the opium-induced visions experienced by a love-lorn young poet, and includes the chilling and doom-laden 'March to the Scaffold'.
Join us for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm.
Free tickets for under 16s and £5 tickets for students are available from the Trinity Orchestra Box Office on 020 8428 5924 or at the door (subject to availability).
