Four years after The Holland Handkerchief, Mary McPartlan's brilliant bolt-from-the-blue debut, comes a no less accomplished follow-up in the confession-laced Petticoat Loose. Here she collaborates with poet and playwright-turned-lyricist Vincent Woods and, once again, with composer Mairtin O'Connor and a team of crack soloists. Her voice sounds as if it were dug straight out of the soil of her native County Leitrim and is as sweet and smoky as burning turf. It's the sheer honesty of McPartlan's distinctive vocals - not for nothing has she been called the Bessie Smith of Irish traditional music - that catches the imagination as much as the ear here. Mary will be joined on stage with Ireland's greatest traditional musicians and composers Mairtin O'Connor, Cathal Hayden and Seamie O'Dowd. “With startling brio, Mary McPartlan returns to the fray with a bristling, blistering successor to her solo debut, 2004's The Holland Handkerchief. A snapshot in time, whispering of a creative surge in full flow.” (Irish Times Review 25 Jan, 2008 - 4 Stars)
