THE SHORTWAVE SET The Shortwave Set are a British psychedelic pop band who combine samples and songs to create a sound the group describe as 'Victorian Funk'. Their debut album, The Debt Collection, was released in 2005 on Independiente/Sony. They formed in 2003 in London, though Ulrika Bjorsne is originally from Alstermo in southern Sweden. They have toured with Goldfrapp, Rilo Kiley and Gnarls Barkley.
THE MENTALISTS With all of Kate Jackson and Karen O's appeal, dulcet tones and gusto and the 'now' ness of New Young Pony Club ~ London ladies of style and attitude The Mentalists are a ready made package for shipment to success. Part post punk, part new rave and high heels that would gladly stamp on your balls if you got in their way! Front woman Kim E Leon howls like a banshee with aggression and urgency as her amazon army of a band thunder along behind her ~ a pack of lasses you do not want to mess with. The Fall, The Clash, No Doubt, The Slits, The Specials, The Noisettes, Siouxsie Sioux and Goldfrapp all have elements of influence on the sound and the mission of The Mentalists.
STRAWHOUSES is all about that feeling that we're living blissfully unaware that we're on unsteady ground. Built on a forte for intense and emotional live sets, with gripping melodies and soaring guitars underpinned by inventive and original rhythms and beats, Strawhouses got together in 2005. Inspired by Orwellian conspiracies, their lyrics range from apocalyptic nightmare visions of the future to the collapse of everyday relationships, to self conscious, claustrophobic confessions of past mistakes. Their musical influences are diverse; from the melody kings of Radiohead, REM and U2, to the tribal beats of Killing Joke, to the darkest moments of Joy Division and The Smiths.
