Trinity Orchestra’s 2018/2019 season gets off to an exciting start with a concert conducted by Robin Newton, a young conductor who is enjoying a rapidly-developing career.
The programme features vibrant works written by well-known Czech composers, marking 100 years since the independence of Czechoslovakia in October 1918.
We open in rousing style with a performance of Scherzo Capriccioso, a happy-go-lucky showpiece by Antonín Dvořák. Written during the period of Dvořák’s first real international fame, the joy of once and for all escaping poverty can be heard throughout.
There follows a performance of Bedrich Smetana’s nationalistic and ever-popular ‘Vlatva’ from his symphonic poem Ma Vlast. The music evokes the flow of the Vltava River from its source in the mountains of the Bohemian Forest, through the Czech countryside, to the city of Prague.
In contrast is the electrifying Sinfonietta by Leos Janáček. This very expressive and festive late work for large orchestra (including 25 brass players) is dedicated “To the Czechoslovak Army” and Janáček said it was intended to express “contemporary free man, his spiritual beauty and joy, his strength, courage and determination to fight for victory.”
Closing the concert is Josef Suk’s Fairy Tale. This allegorical piece is a love story based on an old legend from Eastern Europe. The music is full of evocative folk melodies, displaying a wealth of lyricism and memorable themes.
