Event information

Kathryn’s work is deeply connected to the landscape and people of Northumbria, in particular the North Tyne Valley where many of her relatives still play traditional music. Kathryn took up the Northumbrian smallpipes at the age of nine and by the age of thirteen had won all the traditional open smallpipes competitions. She is recognised as one of the foremost pipers in the world. She is also an accomplished fiddle player, and has won several Open Fiddle awards for her playing.
Since releasing her first album, 'On Kielderside' at the age of sixteen, Kathryn has toured extensively throughout the UK and abroad, both as a solo artist and with The Kathryn Tickell Band. She has composed music for productions by Newcastle’s Live Theatre, presented a series of programmes for Radio 2, presented a series of TV programmes on music composition for Channel 4 Schools, and
recorded with the Penguin Café Orchestra, The Chieftains, Beth Nielsen‐Chapman, Jimmy Nail, Linda Thompson, Alan Parsons, Andy Sheppard and many others. Kathryn has also contributed to four
Sting albums, as well as joining him to play live at Newcastle City Hall, Carnegie Hall New York, and also television appearances.
In 2008 her composition, 'Confluence', was premiered at the BBC Proms. Composed for London Sinfonietta, Muzsikas (Hungary), the London Side by Side Players, and the North East's
young folk ensemble Folkestra, 'Confluence' evokes an imaginary meeting point of the River Rede (Northumberland), the Thames and the Danube. The latest Kathryn Tickell Band album, 'Instrumental', was released in Spring 2007.

'... with fluent Northumbrian piping and fiddle playing, faultless professionalism and an engaging
stage presence, Tickell may well be the best living advertisement for English folk music.'
