David Bramwell's The Cult of Water
with special guest Chris Roberts
Thurs May 30th Doors 7pm 7.30pm-8.30pm £10/8
Station Hall, Herne Hill, SE24 0JW
The Cult of Water combines original music, film and artwork with archive footage and a captivating monologue. Infused with incense and rituals, it is a feast for the senses and soul, taking audiences on a dream-like journey in search of the ‘spirit of dark and lonely waters’, and a quest to understand the symbolic relationship between water and the feminine.
Bramwell journeys back in time to the source of the river Don, through drowned villages, ladybird plagues and the devastation of our landscapes by the industrial revolution, finally arriving in a pre-Christian era when wells and springs were portals to another realm. Along the journey he learns about hydromancy from author Alan Moore, battles with his own thalassophobia (the fear of ‘what lurks beneath’) and unearths little-known myths surrounding our waterways.
The performance concludes with a Q&A with Chris Roberts, on the folklore of London’s rivers.
David Bramwell is an award-winning radio presenter for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. He is co-creator of Sing-along-a-Wickerman, author of The Haunted Moustache and co-presenter of Odditorium Podcast.
