The Space: meet two leading figures from the music industry. The Space is Brighton’s monthly unique arts and media event, which brings together the creative community with special guest interviews. Tonight sees Lisa Holloway welcoming Heather Jones and Nick Gatfield.
In her current role, Heather Jones has overall responsibility for content and creativity across the music and comedy channel portfolio at MTV Networks UK & Ireland. Heather oversees and manages all areas from strategy through to production across nine branded music channels, as well as maintaining overall direction of three Paramount Comedy channels. Prior to her role at MTV, she was Managing Director at Paramount Comedy, having joined as Director of Programming in 2002. In that time, Heather successfully reinvigorated the brand, firstly re-structuring the company and then launching a total re-brand to reflect the channel’s personality and unique position as the only UK channel dedicated to comedy, as well as overseeing the launch of a third channel, Paramount Comedy 1+.
Nick Gatfield EMI Music’s president of A&R, North America and UK was formerly president of Universal Island Records Group. He has overseen the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Keane, Mika, McFly, Busted, Sugababes, The Feeling and Robyn. Nick began his business career at EMI Records in 1985, working with major artists such as Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys. He was promoted to the position of director of A&R in 1987 (making him the youngest director in EMI’s history) with overall A&R responsibility for all of EMI’s labels including Parlophone and EMI. Signings during his tenure as director of A&R included Radiohead, Blur, EMF and Jesus Jones. He played keyboards and sax for Dexy’s Midnight Runners from 1982 to 1985, the period that included their UK and US hit Come on Eileen. Plus a live performance from Daz Bose.
