THE MINNIKINS (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Nova Scotian, brother and sister, Gabriel Minnikin and Ruth Minnikin sing and play again, as The Minnikins
The Minnikins are multi-instrumentalists and visual artists with impressive rosters of national and international tours as members of bands The Guthries, The Heavy Blinkers, The Earlies and as solo artists.
Demand for their unique voices has found them featured on over 50 recordings.
'Ruth and her brother play an assortment of instruments (accordion, mandolin and guitar) and sing glorious harmonies. Ruth sounds a bit like Laura Cantrell and Gabe has a deep gruff voice like Billy Bob Thorton. It’s acts like these that make a treat for music lovers.' Maverick magazine
'Canadian country gal Ruth Minnikin just gets better and better…‘Folk Art’ finds her shifting further from the sweet country-folk of earlier work into the darker recesses of rural American tradition.' Uncut (4 out of 5 stars)

MARIEE SIOUX (Nevada City, California)
Raised in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, surrounded by rocks filled with gold, whispering pine trees, hippies, rednecks, retirees, rich folks and working class heroes, Mariee Sioux and her spry, delicate finger picking guitar technique has drawn comparisons from Joanna Newsom to Joni Mitchell,.
She has toured through North America and Europe, often alongside fellow Nevada City folk singer Alela Diane (now enjoying success on Rough Trade records) and currently has a beautiful album 'Faces In The Rocks' out soon on highly-respected hometown lable Grass Roots Record Co.
She released a cover of The Cure's 'Love Song' on the Manimal Vinyl label's tribute record 'Perfect As Cats' which also featured the likes of Bats For Lashes, The Dandy Warhols and Indian Jewelry.
’Her twilight narratives detail encounters with ghosts, myriad woodland creatures, and her mom. But with a voice that bends around the branches with more flexibility than her fellow folk-nymphs, you couldn't pick a better guide for your night-hike. - SF Weekly
The effect is hypnotically beautiful, the kind of music you want for a sunrise drive. … and one imagines others will take note if she keeps spinning musical weaves as ambitious as these.’ - San Francisco Bay Guardian
though hailing from the Sierra Nevadas, there is a Smoky Mountain momentum to her acoustic hymns. Enchantingly visceral at times, Sioux's songwriting is hard edged, gorgeously poetic and, well, graphic. The result is an overwhelmingly expansive sound that, while darkened by meticulous fantasy, is uplifted with a soft woodland warble.’ Willamette Weekly
’a delight, an amazingly poetic and telling lyricist’ – LA Record
