Blank Canvas is a night reputed for its eclectic contemporary classical and experimental music programming, which pays no heed to classical music convention.

To launch the 2009-10 season, a very special line-up has been programmed for tonight's edition featuring part human beatboxer, part jazz drummer and part musician-at-large Shlomo in a unique collaboration with the Camberwell Composers’ Collective as well as live sets by the fantastic juice vocal ensemble all in the intimate settings of Café Oto.

Shlomo is one of the world’s leading beatboxers, having worked for years to push the boundaries of beatboxing as an art form. This man’s mouth makes mad, mad music. Shlomo has used these incredible vocal skills to make music with people from all kinds of musical backgrounds, including the Mighty Boosh, Björk, Martha Wainwright, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker and Bill Bailey.

He is responsible for the Vocal Orchestra, a 13-piece beatboxing choir that took the Glastonbury and Big Chill Festivals by storm in 2007, was appointed Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre in 2008, in which he launched Music Through Unconventional Means, and a forthcoming highlight includes the premiere of Anna Meredith’s Concerto for Beatboxer & Orchestra at the QEH in early 2010.

The Camberwell Composers' Collective, founded in 2003 by 5 composers with a passion for making and performing their music together, are Mark Bowden, Emily Hall, Chris Mayo, Anna Meredith and Charlie Piper.

They started by running a night in the Crypt, a jazz club in Camberwell, and have subsequently performed at the Aldeburgh Festival, ECAT, The National Portrait Gallery, Koko and the iF Festival (supporting Alexander's Annexe). Having recently collaborated with 4 visual artists on a residency in Aldeburgh, culminating in performances at the Faster than Sound Festival, Kings Place and Kettle's Yard, they have been invited to continue as Associates for Kettle’s Yard 2009-2010 season and will continue to feature their own compositions alongside performances from the UK's hottest talent.

juice are an experimental vocal trio at the forefront of the UK's experimental/classical scene; their adventurous a cappella performances draw on world music, jazz, folk and pop and they have commissioned countless new works.

They have performed in Park Lane Group’s Young Artists series at the Purcell Room in 2008 and Wigmore Hall in 2009, both to excellent press reviews and they have been featured in the bmic Cutting Edge Series and tour, spnm’s The Sound Source and nonclassical.

‘A night where classical sounds meet electronica squiggles in a flurry of chin-stroking, knowing noodling and musical mastery’ Guardian
