Discovered and pioneered by the legendary BBC Radio DJ John Peel. (one of their sessions for the programme was included in MOJO magazine's '20 Landmark Peel Sessions') The Ukrainians mix up a winning concoction of Western punk-pop and traditional Ukrainian sounds, a blend that's always best served live. As 'Q' magazine says "Going to a Ukrainians gig is like being at the mother of all parties".
Recent album, 'Live in Czeremcha' has been acclaimed as a career high. It has attracted rave reviews and huge amounts of airplay across Europe and North America. And now 2009 sees the release of new studio album "Diaspora"
The band has become established as the world's major exponent of a hybrid of traditional Ukrainian folk and Western rock music. As well as re-interpreting centuries’ old traditional Ukrainian folk classics, they've become notorious for "'Ukrainianised" versions' of classic Western pop songs by T.Rex, The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Prince and The Velvet Underground.
"Instruments like whirling dervishes, the mix of Powerpop and Ukraine is courageous and a touch inspirational."
- Folk Roots
"They were mining Balkan Beat long before Eugene Hutz and Gogol Bordello became the toast of the New York / East Side hipster scene."
- Word
"A relentless partying dervish of guitars, accordions and mandolins"
- Uncut
"As invigorating as a midwinter dip in the Black Sea with a shot of vodka on the side"
- Word
"The seeds of this whole Balkan beat shebang were sown by The Ukrainians, and Diaspora finds them in storming form"
- Metro
