Event information

Born in Zimbabwe, Tony Cox moved to South Africa in the late 60s having absorbed and assimilated the traditional African styles of his birthplace that were a constant source of inspiration and delight to him. This grounding in the African way of creating music stayed with him throughout the plethora of other influences that came his way. Cox became a controversial figure, writing many songs with powerful anti-apartheid themes, before eventually deciding to concentrate fully on writing instrumental music for the acoustic guitar. But for all of Cox’s deeply serious work, he has a dry and wicked sense of humour and is a superb entertainer, often having his audiences in stitches.
Against all odds, in a country that has struggled through the deprivations of apartheid and had very little time and money for its home-grown musicians, as an acoustic guitarist, Cox has managed through sheer persistence and dedication to his craft, to carve out a singular niche for himself in South Africa, picking up three music awards along the way (all in the ‘best instrumental’ category).

“Tony conjured up varying moods and layers of emotion and swept the audience along from American Bluegrass to the campgrounds of Shongweni, to the turbulence of life on Zimbabwe’s farms” The Highway Mail, SA

“Tony Cox is something of a phenomenon in the world of guitar music” The Mercury, SA
