Every new female artist seems to need a story these days. A hastily-dreamed-up x-factor to draw you in. Well, how about this for a tale. Beautiful Hereford girl writes beautiful folk-tinged songs and sings them beautifully. No mockney affectations, no C-list parentage, no consciously kooky dress sense, no over-stylised sound you'll be embarrassed to remember liking six months from now. Emily's originality lies in her authenticty.
There's a sincerity and warmth to her songs. Emily sings of genuine emotions; emotions that we can easily identify with. This isn't a scenester flitting through London with a trust fund, or a 17-year-old serving up twee sixth-form poetry. This is an evolving artist enriched by real experience. Not to mention possessing an untrainable ear for gloriously hummable, foot-tapping melodies. For all her wistful romanticism, there's plenty soul here, too. This is a girl influenced by Joni Mitchell's searing honesty, Nick Drake's fragile beauty, even John Mayer's naggingly catchy choruses, but filtered into a sound unique to her. Emily Davies is an artist you'd love to keep as your own special secret. But she's far too good to remain a secret for long.
