We're doing something different at The Sponge tonight with a couple of Edinburgh previews, one from the absolutely superb Josie Long, and another from the unrelated-but-similarly-bearded duo comprised of Daniel Smith and James W Smith.
'Be Honourable!' is the title of the new show from the utterly brilliant JOSIE LONG. It is about trying to be a saint, strangers, politics, complacency and breakfast. The aim of the show is to provoke people into changing the world. If you like breakfast but not the idea of the rest, you'll be pleased to know the breakfast bit is at the start, freeing the second half up for your own private thoughts. Things like this have been written about Josie in the recent past:
"There are a few exquisite gems of observations in here, keenly forged into quirkily intelligent jokes. These are gags that deserve to be preserved under a glass case in their own museum of whimsical wit."
'A Matter of Life, Death, and Middle Distance Running' is exactly what it sounds like. While JAMES W SMITH will attempt to explain the meaning of life, Laughing Horse finalist DANIEL SMITH will begrudgingly tell you the secret of immortality. Roger Black will certainly be mentioned at some point.
In keeping with the spirit of temporary change, the brilliant PAUL SWEENEY will be stepping into the fray as our guest compere for the evening. Paul Foot thinks he is ace ("swishes about the stage like a surreal tea caddy, liberally tickling our funny bones with his marvellous, unusual, quercine humours"), as did the magazine Funny Free Fringe ("Brilliant, bubbly personality, bursting with talent. Showing a more varied style of humour. The mix of music and comedy one of the highlights of the free fringe.").
And you could be getting all this for just £5? Wow. What a deal.
