Duke Vincentio leaves the city of Vienna in the hands of his deputy Angelo, who ushers in an era of brutal repression, especially regarding sexual behaviour. Claudio, a young man who has got his girlfriend pregnant, is condemned to death. His sister Isabella pleads for his life and Angelo agrees to reprieve him – in return for sex.
But the Duke hasn’t left – he’s gone underground. And knows everything.
A lurch towards authoritarian government; powerful men using their power for sexual purposes; sexually-repressive legislation; sleaze; remind you of anything in our modern world?
in situ: has produced many challenging and powerful Shakespeare productions, many of them in conjunction with CPPF - including the nightmarish world of abused and broken dolls in Macbeth; the weird world of mirrors in Twelfth Night and the Post-Apocalypse version of King Lear in the ancient landscape of Wandlebury Ring.
Measure for Measure is as urgent and compelling now as it was when it was written more than 400 years ago.
