HEDDA GABLER by HENRIK IBSEN
Translated by Michael Meyer
Thrilling, enigmatic, destructive, Hedda Gabler is one of theatre’s most irresistible heroines.
It is the study of a fascinating yet tragic and hateful woman ensnared in a stuffy middle class environment and trapped in a state of pregnancy in a loveless marriage, which her twisted fastidious nature finds unbearably offensive.
Returning from her honeymoon and already bored with her marriage, Hedda finds herself caught between the brilliant but Bohemian dissolute Eilert Loevborg and the clutches of the predatory Judge Brack. As a shocking path of destruction unfolds to an exciting nail biting climax, there can be only one outcome.
This translation by Michael Meyer presents Ibsen’s theatrical masterpiece in such a way that it grips like a thriller. Often compared to Lady Macbeth or a female Hamlet - Hedda Gabler will shock, tease and mesmerise all who behold her.
The play gradually builds in tempo as the tension mounts. One feels as if one is climbing a spiral, faster and higher - until the final pistol shot brings a sense of release...
